The interplay between structure and agency on 1958 British Birth cohort members’ decisions to enter higher education as young or mature students between 1976 and 2008: a mixed methods investigation

Aim: To examine the interplay between social structure and individual agency on 1958 British cohort member’s decisions to enter higher education and gain the qualification of a 1st degree as a young or mature student and to uncover the meaning of participating in higher education as told in their life stories.

Research question 1: What role to social structures and individual agency have to play on decisions to enter higher education as a young or mature student?

Research question 2: What is the meaning and significance of higher education in the life stories told by 1958 cohort members?

Research question 3: To what extent is the interplay of structure and agency on decision making able to be revealed by using mixed methods longitudinal secondary data?
